Charley Carmichael's loyalty may be with the Pennsylvania Rail Road's main man, Mason Aderley, but his heart lies with the men who work the rails. With the railroads cutting wages, a major strike is imminent. Caught up in the riots and bloodshed sweeping the continent, Charley's friends are threatened; workers are dying. Charley's life turns tragic when his wife is diagnosed with consumption.
Emily, forced to leave her family due to her health, travels to her cousin's home in the California Territory. A damaged trestle prevents her train from crossing a ravine, stranding the passengers with nowhere to hide when an Indian hunting party causes a deadly buffalo stampede. Fearing for her life, Emily worries she will never see her children again. Who will care for them should her husband not survive the railroad strike?
Set between a farming lifestyle in the rolling hills of south central New York and the gritty railroad realities of Philadelphia, this is one family's story of courage, spirit, and resilience.

Ribbons of Steel was a riveting and heartwarming story of a family who pulled together and drew on their strengths to survive in a tumultuous time. The main character, Charlie, was strong and deeply committed to both his job and his family. His wife, while ill, was just as strong. I loved everything about this story, which I could tell was well researched. I loved that Charlie's oldest son became a man right before our eyes. I enjoyed his romantic sub plot too. Overall, a wonderful story!Product details

Ribbons of Steel edition by Carol Henry Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I enjoyed this book! Carol has done a great job, keeping the reader interested in all the characters , and the different paths each one takes. I would definitely read a sequel or two!
Good familiarity with the subject. The railroad history in this country contributes an understanding of our heritage. Good reading.
The story was historically accurate and put a local spin on an important milestone in our history.
I am looking forward to a sequel.
Very family-oriented adventure. Difficult to put down..made me smile through-out . I only gave 4 stars because I wanted more!
I found this book interesting because, like the author, I grew up in the small town mentioned in the book. I was interested in how the history of the railroads tied in to my home town and things that might possibly have happened decades before I was born. I've heard various stories by word of mouth and know of landmarks & buildings where the trains are said to have gone through.
The story itself was a bit low key and a little disjointed. I was glad to see it offered for free and not have to pay the list price.
A well researched novel blending romance, history and the trials and tribulations of family life in uncertain times. I especially liked the fact that the ending could be the beginning of another romance.
This book keeps your attention as it moves between the personal life of a railroad worker and the issues with this family and the potential railroad strike. Just enough historical information but not too much. This book is a little different from the others that Carol Henry has written that I have read, Shanghai Connection and Connection, but equally as well written and entertaining.
